Safety Innovations has been making this latch for years. It’s a great tool to keep babies out of closets or rooms with known hazards. Adults can open the door from either side. This simple U-shaped device rides back and forth on the door top. It requires one screw installed in the door frame. It is designed specifically for interior doors with 1-3/8″ thickness. For applications with thicker doors there is another brand, “GlydLok“, door top latch. It’s made of metal and has an insert that can be removed for thicker doors.

The metal GlydLok door-top-latch is designed for a standard interior door. It has a removable spacer allowing it to work on a thicker door as well such as a furnace room or the interior door leading to the garage. Adults can open the door from either side but it’s out of reach to babies. This simple device requires one screw installed in the door frame.

In order for either of the two door-top-latches to function smoothly there must be adequate clearance between the door and the frame above the door. This device is very simple but works well. There is nothing to install. The device juts rests on top of the closet door. Just slide it across to the door junction to prevent the door from opening outward. There are two brands to choose from. They’re both similar in quality and design.

This item can be applied easily and is available at this link. It seems to work well and is a great childproofing solution for interior closet doors. I’ve seen images on the internet of people using similar devices to childproof exterior or patio sliding doors. I wouldn’t recommend that because the door would be too heavy. Even a slight tug from a two-year-old would eventually cause the device to come off of the glass.
